Did you know you can walk up Table Mountain?

Table Mountain is one of the world's most recognisable mountains. Rising up from Table Bay Harbour, it creates a natural amphitheatre embracing the city of Cape Town. The mountain is the northernmost point of a range of mountains that stretch the entire length of the Cape Peninsula to Cape Point.

This range is part of the Cape Floral Kingdom and home to about 2500 species of indigenous plant and provides superb walking opportunities to suit the fitness levels of every visitor.

BoBCaT Safaris offers many ascents and walks on Table Mountain and the following are the most popular (please note times indicated are for ascent only). Please contact us directly for more extreme, exciting or challenging day walks and climbs:

Platteklip Gorge

Grading – Fit legs / Steep ascent, approx 2.5 hours and 720m ascent.

The Platteklip Ascent has been the most popular ascent of the mountain for the past 350 years. This route ascends the front of the mountain and emerges between Maclears Beacon (the highest point) and the cable station. This route offers magnificent views of the city, the harbour and across the Cape Flats to the Hottentots Holland Mountains.

India Venster

Grading – Fit legs & agility required / Steep ascent, approx 3 hours and 720m ascent.

This route ascends the front aspect of Table Mountain and runs immediately below the path of the cable car for some sections. It includes several easy climbs of approximately 4 metres each, where some agility and a tolerance of heights are required. The climb offers views of the city, the harbour and the Camps Bay beach.

Woody Ravine

Grading – Fit legs / Steep ascent, approx 2.5 hours and 535m ascent.

This pretty route ascends on the Atlantic Ocean aspect of Table Mountain and offers dramatic views of the Ocean as well as of the Twelve Apostles – the buttresses that make-up the western side of Table Mountain. The walk passes through a beautiful shady ravine and emerges on the lower “back” table of Table Mountain. From here it is possible to descend on foot by a different route or to continue to the front table (an additional 1.5 hrs walk and 333m ascent) in order to descend by cable car (if it is operating, weather permitting).

Nursery Ravine

Grading – Fit legs / Steep ascent, approx 2.5 hours and 560m ascent.

This route ascends on the Eastern aspect of Table Mountain from above Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. It passes through a beautiful example of Table Mountain afro-montane forest and along a cool stream. Beautiful views are obtained and the walk emerges on the lower “back table” from where it is possible to continue to Maclear's Beacon and the cable station (an additional 2 hrs walking and 307 metres ascent).
