As far back as 1679, the Dutch Governor of The Cape - Simon Van Der Stel, had the insight to recognise the great potential for wine production at the new colony. He also had sufficient appetite for wine to motivate him to do something about this insight. Finally he had the political opportunity to offer refuge to French Pro test ants fleeing religious persecution - provided that they had experience with wine production. These factors formed the foundation for the South African wine industry, which has since developed a reputation for excellence.
Our wineland tour visits some of the original wine estates in Stellenbosch and Franschoek and allows you to taste wines at source and to learn about the wine making process. The winelands are located in exquisite valleys with magnificent mountains surrounding.
The winelands are not just about wine and so on this tour we can also visit historic museums, diamond cutters, a funky glass blowing studio, do some cheese tasting, visit a chocolate factory, pat a cheetah, watch birds of prey exercise, visit a butterfly farm and much more..... And the winelands also have a reputation for outstanding cuisine - so lunch is always a treat.
The tour would expect to end back in Cape Town late afternoon.
